No More Hair Weaves or Wigs!

May 13, 2014 By Debra LB. 10 Comments

I CHOOSE TO GO  BALD.

It feel so good to be free of weaves and wigs. If is one thing I regret doing, is wearing weaves.

Believe it or not at one point in my life I wore my hair natural until I migrated to the USA and fell into the same trap that a lot of black women fall into. I call it the “Weave and Wig Wearing Trap.”
As black women we define long and luxurious European hair as beauty, maybe that’s because we were made to believe that it was, which is very , very sad. I no longer believe that hair defines beauty, I believe beauty comes from within.

As black women, we should embrace our blackness, our beautiful skin and and most important our hair. I wished I had embraced my natural hair many years ago.

I finally made my decision to shave my head after I did a charity fundraiser in Harlem NY. There was a woman at the function, didn’t get her name, but her hair was very short, almost bald, I don’t know if she wore here hair by choice or from illness, but whatever the case she stood very proud , she embraced her her baldness or her very short hair and I admired her, she was very beautiful.

I listened to Rev. Joan M. Williams-Jarrell who is  the Executive Director of Beth Hark Christian Counseling Center, Inc.speech at the same event and I was really moved, so with all the emotions fresh inside of me, I did a lot of thinking and thought to myself, why am I holding myself  back. OFF WITH THE HAIR !

I shaved my hair off on Mothers Day, May 11 2014. Most of my family members immediately loved it. Some were in shock, but still loved it all the same. But most of all, my hubby loves and is very supportive of me.

the best things about being bald

the best things about being bald

The best things about being bald for me are:
1. I will never have another bad hair day.
2. I can walk pass the hair supply store without going in.
3. I will not be spending money on weaves and wigs anymore.
4. I will never get caught with my roots showing.
5. I am actually free from the fake hair world! Yeah!

I went bald because I was extremely tired of everything it took to maintain my hairstyle, the fake hairstyle that I created FOR MYSELF.
I went bald because I wanted to be free,  and going to that charity event give me the motivation I needed to do it. “Everything Happens For A Reason”
If you’re not black, you will not know what I am talking about..

The black hair care business is a mufti-billion dollar a year business, we get so trapped by the wigs and the weaves that we are scared and nervous to give it up, we wonder what will people think of us? we often wonder will  people know it wasn’t my hair ! “Hello!  people know it’s not your natural hair – it’s just not spoken about.

I SUPPORT THE BALD MOVEMENT

I support the Bald Movement

Not everyone will go bald, but if you are and will be wearing weaves, please make sure you take good care of your hair and have your weave removed by a professional hair dresser.

Inspiration I got from across the Web

The goal is to take away the adage that hair is everything and add that we as individuals are everything and hair is like an accessory, whether you have it or not, it doesn’t define who you are, you do. by Nell Coleman

Hair is an extension of one’s self. Hair does not make the person. In fact, character and confidence can completely change the shape of a hairstyle. So let’s stop telling someone else how one should wear their hair, and stop trying to insult each other to make ourselves feel better. Let’s stop defining ourselves by the nature of our hair. Live freely and direct your energy into helping others build up their good character and confidence. by Sprinkly

You look beautiful without a wig, you can see your face more. I always think it's better when you can actually see a person's whole face. Very inspiring! Thank you for linking up to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party. I have pinned your post to the Bloggers Brags Pinterest board.

This is such a inspiration to so many. I myself wear a wig as I have been losing my hair since I was 12. The only reason I do wear a wig is because I have a rash that goes with my hair loss and it's aggravated by sunlight. I really do wish I could just shave whats left off and go bald with you!

Sorry to hear what you are going through, isn't there something you can use for the rash.. Going bald is such a sense of freedom. I really feel liberated.
