The Most Amazing Caribbean Rum Punch

July 31, 2015 By Deborah LB 11 Comments

The Most Amazing Caribbean Rum Punch

I haven’t thought about rum punch in a long time, in fact I only think about rum punch during the holidays. You see, growing up in Trinidad and Tobago you’ve come to realize that certain drinks are only for the holidays , like Rum Punch, Punch O Creme, Sorrel, Peardrax, Cydrax and the list goes on.

Some other drinks used to be seasonal such as Passion Fruit, Soursop, Barbadine etc!,  but not anymore, these drinks can be made and enjoy anytime of the year now, as we can get the ingredients in dry and frozen form.. What a wonderful thing!

Although some of the frozen and even the dry ingredients are not the same as the real thing, we embrace them,  we deal with it! Yeah we deal with it!

The Most Amazing Caribbean Rum Punch

Anyway today is all about Rum Punch. forget about the others for awhile.

You may ask. What the hell is rum punch? especially if you are not from the Caribbean or any place not familiar with the Caribbean type drinks, well I am here to tell you it’s simply rum with added fruit juice and sweetness and you have heaven, if you have ever been to heaven you know what I mean.

My son called or he may have text,  and ask for a Rum Punch and Jerk Sauce recipe as he was planning a Caribbean Themed Dinner.

Growing up in Trinidad, the adults or at least my grandfather will always make rum punch for the holidays and I remember him saying it’s always .

  1. One of sour
  2. Two of sweet
  3. Three of strong
  4. Four of weak

That’s what I told my son, he was like “WHAT” and started laughing, I said to him.

RUMPUNCH01

One sour (lime juice)

Two sweet (simple syrup – or anything really sweet)

Three strong (that would be the RUM!)

Four weak (water , ice or fruit juice or a  combination of all)

Angostura (Aromatic) Bitters

Let me stop boring you and get to the recipe.

One more thing the limes were juicy as hell..

Ingredients

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice " about 6-8 limes"
  • 1 cup simple syrup
  • 1 cup grenadine syrup
  • 3 cups rum - "I use a Bacardi gold"
  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice
  • 10 drops angostura bitters
  • nutmeg for garnish, (this is totally optional)
  • orange and/or lime slices for garnish on glass rims
  • Simple Syrup
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • Directions
  • Bring the water to a boil.
  • Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water, stirring constantly until the sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes.
  • When sugar is dissolved completely, remove pan from the heat. (Note: Do not allow the syrup to boil for very long or the syrup will be really thick once it cools down.)
  • Let cool completely before using.

Method

  1. Add everything together with the exception of the garnish ingredients and blend in a blender or place in a container and shake well.
  2. Chill in your refrigerator until ready to drink.
  3. Add ice cubes , sprinkle with nutmeg, garnish with lime or orange slices and serve

Notes

Remember to strain the pulp from the lime juice or not, I did not strain my pulp as that's how I like it. It's all up to you and your preference. You can also make a slushy out of it, by crushing about 5 ice cubes with a glass of the rum punch, REALLY GOOD! My hubby loves it like that. You can use any good dark Caribbean rum for this punch. You can always use a Sorrel syrup for that really great Caribbean flavor if you prefer that over the grenadine and the simple syrup. You can use fresh or packed juices

Debra, we are just home from Nevis, and I found your recipe for rum punch. I am curious about the measurements for simple syrup. Your recipe calls for one cup, but your instructions for making it only call for 3/4 C water. Does the volume of the sugar added to the water result in a cup of syrup, or do you add something more? Thank you!MJ Ruch

Hi Debra, I came across your recipe by chance and it brought back many memories of Trinidad. You are right, the limes are juicy as hell in Trini, and about the size of a large lemon, not like the golf ball sized ones you get in the states. As for the "two sweet', brown sugar works fine. The local rum was Old Oak, which I think was not owned by Angustura at the time. It was 1.00 per quart, 1.00 BWI that is, which was equivalent to 0.60 US. Many Trinidadians I knew preferred Mount Gay which was a little more expensive. Now I'm going to have to go mix me some punch and put on my old Desperados and Mighty Sparrow albums and remember the great times I had in Trinidad. Fred (friend of the Hammer and Ellie Mannette)

I made this rum punch for a competition and it won first prize! The judge said it tasted amazing and I agree with her, it tasted just like the rum punch we had on our Caribbean cruise. Thanks so much for posting this recipe, I'll definitely be making it again :)
